It's a Feeling, It's a Movement, It's Dance
I was lucky enough to grab some of my dancers during the season and create this photoshoot I've had in my mind since I picked up a camera. Anyone can capture a picture, but it takes a plan to capture the feeling and movement of dance.
Let me tell you, it takes a lot of trial and error to make that plan come alive. Luckily, these girls made it quite easy for me with their absolute talent.
Here are a few of my favorite shots:
MY TIPS & TRICKS
1. Be specific on what you want your dancers to wear.
If they are young (like mine-- highschoolers), you'll definitely want to tell them more than once.
I knew that I wanted this set in black and white, so all black, fitted clothing was the obvious answer for me. This is important for the overall feel of the photoset.
2. Plan and research poses.
Even dancers get brain farts. Make sure to have an arsenal of poses that the dancers can look through and get inspiration from. I made a board on Pinterest and just pulled it up on my phone when we got stuck.
This will also add to the overall vibe. Don't be afraid to plan their facial expressions, too! Depending on how seasoned your dancer is, this will help them feel more comfortable. The face is usually the last (and most embarrassing) part younger girls will think about.
3. Lastly, try, try and TRY AGAIN.
I took so many photos trying to get my vision perfect and that's okay! Just make sure to check in with your dancers, making sure they are still stretching and taking care of their bodies during the shoot.
That's it! Now go and grab some dancers and get shooting!
